Twenty Five Denver Area Teachers Gather for Fiction Workshop with Author, Jennifer Davis

On Saturday, February 26th the Denver Writing Project hosted its spring writing retreat--a fiction workshop with author, Jennifer Davis. During the retreat, more than 25 teachers participated in exercises on point of view and character development and gained teaching ideas to take back to their K-16 classrooms.

Using odd and sensational news stories as inspiration, retreat participants wrote through several levels of character development and then shared their work with other participants. In this workshop Davis reveled two valuable tenets of fiction writing: look for inspiration in the bizarre, and let the characters direct the story.

Jennifer Davis is a renowned creative writing professor at UCD, as well as the author of four published short stories and two books. Her book Her Kind of Want received the Iowa Award for short fiction. She has an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Alabama. We were honored to have her facilitate this workshop, and we look forward to continuing our professional relationship with the UCD English Department for future retreats.
